This is the place where St. Francis renounced the world by symbolically stripping himself of his garments and giving them back to his father, Pietro Bernardone.
The church was built over the home of St. Francis, and is where you can still see the prison that his father put him in in hope that he would change his mind and re-embrace the world and his earthly inheritance.
