What an honor it was to celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome, where the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is enshrined.

I brought your intentions with me to this sacred place and offered them at the altar beneath her gaze. Know that you remain in my prayers. The only set of stairs that must be climbed on your knees.

These are the Scala Sancta—the very steps that Jesus Christ ascended to stand before Pontius Pilate, after being scourged and just before Pilate’s haunting words: “Ecce Homo – Behold the Man.”

These 28 marble steps were brought from Jerusalem to Rome in the 4th century by St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, who devoted her life to finding and preserving the holy places and relics of Christ’s life.

There are no words to fully express what it means to ascend these steps on our knees —steps sanctified by Christ’s suffering—in prayer and silence, reflecting on the depth of His love and the price of our salvation. View more
